Star Moss Care Sheet

Star Moss Care Sheet
Scientific Name: Tortula ruralis
Lighting Requirements:
Star moss thrives under moderate to bright indirect light. Full-spectrum LED grow lights are ideal for consistent growth and vibrant green coloration. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can dry out and damage the moss.
Humidity & Watering:
Maintain high humidity levels (60-80%) for optimal growth. Mist regularly to keep the moss moist but not saturated. Use reverse osmosis (RO), distilled, or dechlorinated water to prevent mineral buildup that can damage the moss.
Temperature Range:
Star moss prefers temperatures between 60-80°F. It can tolerate slight fluctuations but should be kept away from extreme heat or cold sources.
Substrate & Placement:
Best grown on moisture-retentive substrates like sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, or well-draining bioactive soil. It also thrives when attached to logs, rocks, and hardscapes within terrariums.
Growth & Maintenance:
Star moss spreads gradually and requires minimal maintenance. No trimming or fertilization is needed. If portions become dry or brittle, mist more frequently to encourage rehydration.
